In addition to being a softener, Nozoil forms a protective film on the mucous membrane in the nose, thus protecting against foreign particles such as allergens. Most substances that cause allergies are proteins that are soluble in the water found in the mucus in the nose. Water-soluble proteins do not dissolve in oil. By adding oil, allergy-causing proteins such as pollen can become trapped in the oil, which is then transported away by the cilia in the nose. The cells of the nose are protected and allergic reactions can be reduced.
Medications from nasal sprays can also cause irritation in the nose. People with allergies e.g. often use cortisone spray to treat allergic reactions in the nose. When using cortisone spray, a common side effect is a burning sensation in the nose and dry and sore nasal mucosa. By using Nozoil ten minutes after a person with allergies has taken cortisone spray, these side effects can be alleviated.
